Hammer Mill Rotor & Bearing Assembly

ATLUS designed a rotor and bearing assembly for a small hammer-mill shredder processing mixed aluminium products. The replacement fits within the existing shredder body while providing the strength, wear resistance and shock-load tolerance required for a duty that the original rotor could not sustain.

Project at a glance

  • A Necessary Retrofit

    • The original rotor and cast bearing housings were not sufficiently durable for the repeated impact and abrasive conditions created by mixed aluminium feedstock.

    • A stronger replacement was required without changing the existing shredder body, available installation envelope or principal mounting interfaces.

  • Built Tough

    • ATLUS redesigned the rotor geometry, shaft and bearing arrangement around the existing machine interfaces and required size-reduction duty.

    • Hardox rotor discs and Toolox hammer pins were combined with, single-piece billet bearing housings and labyrinth rings.

  • A More Durable Assembly

    • The finished assembly fits within the existing shredder body, allowing the surrounding plant to remain the same rather than be extensively modified or replaced.

    • Billet-machined bearing housings provide a stronger support than the original cast components, while the selected rotor materials and bearings are better suited to abrasive feedstock and repeated shock loading.

Key Outcomes

  • Replacement assembly matched to the existing shredder body, zero alterations needed

  • Wear-resistant Toolox hammer pins increase maintenance interval from 250 to 1,000 operating hours

  • Cast bearing housings and seals replaced with single-piece billet components

  • Rotor, shaft and bearings verified using a 2.5× shock-load factor, with a safety factor of ≥2.0
