Methanol Storage Tank

Design and detailing of a 4m³ rectangular tank for storing methanol at atmospheric pressure. Stainless-steel sheet and an external RHS frame provide a compact, reinforced vessel with dedicated connections for filling, venting, instrumentation, drainage and inspection.

Project at a glance

  • Efficient Use of Space

    • The client required 4m³ of methanol storage within a restricted plant area. A rectangular vessel made fuller use of the available space than a cylindrical tank occupying a similar envelope.

    • The tank needed to accommodate filling, withdrawal, atmospheric venting, level monitoring and internal inspection while keeping routine operating points accessible.

  • Ease of Manufacture

    • Plate sizes and stiffener members were selected around standard material sizes, simplifying procurement, cutting and workshop assembly while limiting unnecessary offcuts.

    • The RHS stiffeners divide the walls into manageable panel spans and control deflection under hydrostatic loading. Stiffener positions were coordinated with the manway, nozzles and other local openings.

  • Keep it Simple

    • Standard pipe, flange, plate and member sizes kept procurement and fabrication simple. Fewer specialist operations helped shorten the production programme and control cost.

    • Accessible valves, instrument connections and a side manway support easy maintenance, inspection and cleaning.

Key Outcomes

  • 4.0m³ capacity using 30% less floor area than the equivalent cylindrical design

  • Overfull tank scenario verified against 26kN peak load

  • Blue checkmark inside a blue circle on a white background.

Easy access connections reduce maintenance and inspection time

  • Using standardised materials reduced fabrication lead time by 6 weeks
